Spain and its seismicity

My country is Spain, and although it is located at the edge of the eurasian plate next to the african plate it is not really concerned with too many earthquakes. Most of the quakes that they experience are on the edge of their plate. Looking at its history it has experienced great magnitude earthquakes but their frequency is very low and they occur in long time intervals.

  1. Yes, and most of the earthquakes felt as located in the southern side of the country. Have a look at Moroccos' website! It'd be a nice comparison!

Can you tell us how big is the average quake in Spain? Also, what do Spaniards do to prepare for earthquakes?

  2. I noticed the same for the Bahamas as well, I think that is interesting as well. I know a few of my friends are from Spain and they say they don't really experience earthquakes. Was there a biggest earthquake in Spain ever? And the effects it had on people?

  3. A 7.9 in the South in 1954. It seems that is where most of the shaking happens. In 2011 a medium size one but very shallow hit Lorca (Mw 5.1) destroyed a few old buildings and killed 9 people.
